In Chernivtsi, a man who confessed to arson at a humanitarian headquarters was arrested
In Chernivtsi, law enforcement officers detained a man suspected of arson at the humanitarian headquarters of the international organization Remar S.O.S. in Soborna Square. The detainee confessed to the crime on video.
This was reported by the communication department of the Chernivtsi regional police.
“Yes, on the night of December 1 to 2 of this year, the police received a report that tents with humanitarian aid were on fire in Soborna Square in Chernivtsi. After conducting a series of operational and investigative measures, the police tracked down the criminal. Thanks to the consistent and coordinated actions of the police units, it was possible to determine that a 26-year-old resident of Chernivtsi was involved in the arson,” the report states.
Police arrested the man, and he is now in a temporary detention facility.
In the video released by the law enforcement, the detainee stated that on that night he was passing by the tents of the humanitarian headquarters and wanted to look inside.
"I had a lighter, and where there were things, I took it and set them on fire. I started the fire in two places - there and in another spot," the man said in the video.
During a search, the police discovered and confiscated evidence of the crime at the suspect’s residence. The findings were sent by investigators for examination at the Chernivtsi Research Forensic Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine.
Furthermore, law enforcement officers discovered that the man had previously been prosecuted for property crimes.
At present, police investigators have entered data into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Article 263 (Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Additionally, the issue of informing the detainee of suspicion of committing a criminal offense under Article 194 (Intentional destruction or damage to property) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine is being addressed.
Pre-trial investigation continues.
