In Ukraine, 5 million people suffer from food insecurity, – UN report
In the fourth year of the war, about 5 million Ukrainians face food shortages, with the greatest need observed in the frontline areas.
This is noted in a press release by the World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations.
According to the WFP, millions of people are forced to reduce their food consumption, give their portions to children, or borrow money to feed their families.
The UN WFP continues to provide food and cash assistance to nearly 1.5 million Ukrainians every month, mainly in the frontline regions.
Despite this, 54% of the residents of Kherson face moderate or severe food shortages. In the Zaporizhzhya region, this figure is 43%, and in Donetsk, it is 39%.
In contrast, Kyiv, Lviv, and Rivne regions have the lowest rates, with less than 7% of the population in need of food security assistance.
"Families in the frontline areas of Ukraine are forced to think daily about how to sustain themselves," noted Richard Ragan, the WFP director in Ukraine.
"They struggle to have food on the table every day. While we hope for lasting peace in the country known as the breadbasket of the world, we face a reality where humanitarian aid is a lifeline for millions," he added.
According to WFP monitoring data, 72% of those receiving food assistance reported having to cut the amount of food, skip meals, or purchase less nutritious food.
