Zelenskyy: A prolonged pause between a truce and peace poses a threat of destabilization for Ukraine
The interval between a ceasefire and a final peace must be short, otherwise it could negatively affect the morale of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and destructive processes may begin in Ukraine.
This was stated by Zelenskyy in an interview with Time magazine.
“The window of opportunity between a ceasefire and reaching an agreement to end the war is very narrow. This period should be very short: a month, two, three, and that’s all. After that, it becomes a matter of troop morale. We have 800,000 people in our army,” the Ukrainian president noted.
He also expressed the opinion that “freezing” the war without a full-fledged peace agreement would be destructive for the country.
“If we do not have an agreement to end the war, it will turn into a frozen conflict. We cannot continue living in a state of war. We need to open the borders and liberalize a lot. We can do this if we sign an agreement. If the period between the ceasefire and the agreement is short, we may only see minor violations. It will not be a complete failure. But if the process is prolonged, everything will collapse, and the consequences will be unpredictable,” Zelenskyy said.
