On Thursday, May 1, around 6 a.m., a patient attacked and beat a nurse at the Railway Hospital in Pruszkow.

According to Małgorzata Wawryka, head of the Polish Association of Nurses and Midwives, the aggressive patient was in the intensive care unit. The nurse was trying to put him in bed, but he suddenly jumped up and attempted to remove the equipment. He then hit her in the face, causing her to fall, and continued to strike her.

“He attacked her with his fists, she has a head injury, bruises under her eyes, visible signs of beating, but the doctor said her life is not in danger, and after examination, she was sent home,” Małgorzata Wawryka told journalists. She added that the young patient, addicted to drugs and possibly alcohol, was hospitalized on Wednesday after an epileptic seizure. “He showed aggression from the very beginning, attempting to hurt or hit someone from the start,” added Małgorzata.

The aggressive patient turned out to be a 26-year-old Ukrainian. After being taken to the police station, he was charged with assaulting bodily integrity and then released. The man faces a fine, restriction of liberty, or imprisonment for up to 3 years.

This is the second attack on a healthcare worker this week. On April 29, at the University Hospital in Krakow, 47-year-old orthopedic doctor Tomasz Solecki was brutally murdered. During an examination, a 35-year-old man burst into his office and inflicted several knife wounds. Despite the medical staff’s efforts, the doctor could not be saved. The attacker was a former patient of the doctor, dissatisfied with the treatment, and an employee of the Penitentiary Service.

In connection with the attack, Prime Minister Donald Tusk decided to dismiss the director-general of the Penitentiary Service.

In January in Siedlce, a 62-year-old ambulance worker was killed by a drunken attacker. The paramedic was wounded with a sharp object and died on the way to the hospital.

Justice Minister Adam Bodnar announced that due to the increase in attacks on healthcare workers, a draft amendment to the rules of their protection is being prepared.
