Britain announced new tough sanctions against Russia’s "shadow fleet"
On May 20, the United Kingdom announced a new large-scale package of sanctions against the Russian Federation in response to the latest strikes by Russia on innocent Ukrainians.
This was reported by the government of the country.
"As President Putin ruthlessly intensifies his strikes against innocent Ukrainians, the UK is ramping up the pressure by introducing a suite of 100 new sanctions," the government’s statement said.
These 100 new sanctions target Russia’s military, energy, and financial sectors, as well as those who are conducting Putin’s information war against Ukraine.
The UK and its partners are also working on strengthening restrictions on oil prices, further limiting vital oil revenues for Putin’s military capabilities.
According to Vladyslav Vlasyuk, the authorized representative of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on sanctions policy, the sanctions are aimed at key elements of Russia’s war machine and global networks that help it survive under the restrictions.
According to him, the sanctions target:
- for the first time after Ukraine, against tanker captains,
- against Russian arms manufacturers: enterprises supplying drones, missiles, tanks, aircraft parts for the war against Ukraine
- against "shadow fleet" vessels involved in bypassing the oil embargo and concealed export schemes of Russian oil
- against companies and individuals in third countries (China, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey) that help Russia obtain goods and technologies bypassing sanctions.
Among the targets of the sanctions introduced today is John Michael Ormerod, a British citizen who purchased ships for Russia’s shadow fleet.
