SBI: An investigation has been launched into the Mirage-2000 fighter jet crash in Volyn

The State Bureau of Investigation immediately, right after the official notification, started a pre-trial investigation into the crash of the Mirage-2000 military aircraft in Volyn.

This was reported by the SBI.

"The accident occurred on the evening of July 22, 2025, at one of the region’s airfields during a combat flight mission. Immediately after the incident, investigators and operational staff from the Territorial Office of the SBI in Lviv arrived at the scene. A special investigative group was created, consisting of the most experienced staff from the territorial office and the Central Office of the SBI, who have experience investigating military aviation disasters, to ensure a quick, comprehensive, and objective investigation," the report reads.

As noted, it was preliminarily established that after takeoff, the pilot reported a critical electronics malfunction to the flight director. The aircraft crashed in an uninhabited area and sank in a flooded crater in a swampy area. Professional actions by the pilot helped avoid casualties and damage on the ground.

It is known that the pilot ejected in time, and he was quickly found by the search and rescue team. The serviceman’s condition is stable, and he is receiving the necessary assistance.

The SBI added that the event was qualified under part 2 of article 416 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - violation of flight rules or preparation for them that caused a disaster.

Currently, investigators have examined the scene, seized service documentation and other physical evidence, and conducted witness interrogations. Interrogations of responsible persons, technical examinations, and an analysis and decryption of data from the flight recorder are planned.

"Special attention is being paid to examining the aircraft’s technical condition, adherence to pre-flight preparation regulations, and the effectiveness of control by responsible persons.

Simultaneously, a service investigation is ongoing in the military unit to identify all causes and conditions that could have led to the incident.

The investigation is under special control of the SBI leadership, considering the strategic importance of aviation safety under martial law," noted the SBI.
