Earthquake near Kamchatka: USA, Japan, and other countries declared a tsunami threat
The USA and Japan issued a tsunami warning following a powerful earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia.
This was reported with reference to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and Bloomberg.
According to the United States Geological Survey, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 occurred southeast of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Kamchatka Peninsula on the morning of Wednesday, July 30, local time.
"A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage to the shores of all the Hawaiian Islands," reports the Tsunami Warning System of the U.S. National Weather Service.
Residents are urged to take immediate actions to protect life and property.
The service also reported a tsunami threat for the entire west coast of the USA and Canada, including California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska.
The warning covers from the California-Mexico border through Oregon and Washington to British Columbia in Canada, and then continues to southern Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula.
Additionally, a tsunami threat has been declared for the Aleutian Islands, Guam, the Philippines, Russia, and some Pacific islands, including Yap and the Marshall Islands.
Threat to Japan
Japan’s public broadcaster NHK warned of a tsunami risk and urged people to leave the coastline.
The broadcaster showed cars leaving coastal areas of Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture in northern Japan.
According to the National Meteorological Service, in certain areas of Japan, wave heights could reach up to 3 meters.
For comparison, during the catastrophic tsunami of 2011, wave heights reached nearly 40 meters.
