The State Bureau of Investigation refuted rumors about the alleged refusal to investigate the circumstances of the death of a Ukrainian citizen and ethnic Hungarian, József Sebestyén. In response to false reports spread by the Hungarian side, the SBI urged not to manipulate such statements.

This was reported by the SBI press service. The Bureau also provided details on the progress of the investigation.

"In recent days, foreign and domestic media have again reported on the circumstances of the death on July 6, 2025, of a Ukrainian citizen - ethnic Hungarian József Sebestyén. The main focus of these reports is on the alleged refusal of the SBI to investigate the circumstances of this serviceman’s death. The State Bureau of Investigation states that such statements are manipulative and do not correspond to reality," the Bureau emphasized.

The department added that within the framework of the criminal proceedings, a forensic medical examination was conducted, and witnesses, including servicemen and doctors, were questioned. The forensic medical examination also did not reveal any signs of a violent death.

The SBI also disclosed details of the serviceman József Sebestyén’s death.

As emphasized in the department, József Sebestyén is a Ukrainian citizen, and he was mobilized on legal grounds on June 14, 2025, after passing a medical commission that found him fit for military service.

From June 15, Sebestyén was sent for training to one of the military units, but on June 18, he voluntarily left his place of service, which was recorded in an official service investigation report.

"And already on June 19, he independently contacted the Beregovo Regional Psychiatric Hospital, where he reported feeling unwell, had a severe headache, and, according to him, suffered a head injury with suspected concussion. On the same day, József Sebestyén was taken by ambulance to the Beregovo District Hospital, but doctors did not find any serious injuries," the SBI reported.

On June 24, József Sebestyén, with his consent, was transferred to the Regional Institution for Psychiatric Care in Beregovo. On July 7, the Beregovo Police Department received a report that on July 6, József Sebestyén died in the medical facility.

"During urgent investigative actions at the body inspection, no signs of violent death or bodily injuries were found. Within the framework of the criminal proceedings, a forensic medical examination was conducted, and witnesses, including servicemen and doctors, were questioned. The forensic medical examination also did not reveal any signs of a violent death," the department stated in the report.

The investigation is ongoing, the SBI emphasized.
