Zelenskyy: "We consider joining the EU as part of security guarantees for Ukraine"
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. He also explained what can guarantee security for our country.
This was stated by the President of Ukraine at a press conference with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Brussels on August 17.
"We need security to work in practice, like Article 5 of NATO. We view accession to the EU as part of security guarantees. We have heard from Donald Trump that the US and Russia see it the same way. That is why we discussed EU accession," Zelenskyy stated.
There should be no division between Ukraine and Moldova (regarding accession to the European Union – 24 Channel). According to the Ukrainian leader, this would be a bad step. If such a division occurs, it would mean that Europe is divided on Ukraine and lacks a unified and strong position on guarantees. This, as some in Europe believe, would worsen the situation.
Zelenskyy also stressed that during the meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, they discussed defense issues.
We agreed to work more actively in programs like SAFE (EU defense initiative – 24 Channel), and I count on support with drones. This is important,
– the Ukrainian president emphasized.
In addition, Zelenskyy thanked the President of the European Commission for introducing the 18th sanctions package against Russia. However, in his opinion, it is important to prepare the 19th sanctions package so that Russia sees the seriousness of Ukraine’s and Europe’s intentions.
"Russia’s strategic direction is anti-European, so we must continue to limit Russia’s potential," – the Ukrainian leader stressed.
