Germany is working on security guarantees for Ukraine, — Pistorius
Germany is actively working on developing reliable security guarantees for Ukraine, but its contribution has not yet been determined – it will depend on the course of the peace negotiations and the possible contribution of the USA and will be coordinated with the closest partners.
This was stated on Tuesday by the Federal Minister of Defence of Germany Borys Pistorius.
"We, especially in these days, are aware of our responsibility in Europe and, together with our close partners, are working on developing reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. I am in close contact with the chancellor, the foreign minister, and various colleagues from other countries. We are working intensively to find a solution," Pistorius noted.
According to him, Germany is currently the second-largest supplier of aid to Ukraine and a leader in the field of air defence support. In addition, Germany assumes "political responsibility" – for example, through co-chairing the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) along with the United Kingdom since the beginning of this year.
"We coordinate our actions with NATO and our partners. Last week, we decided to finance one of the first comprehensive support packages amounting to up to 500 million US dollars as part of the so-called PURL mechanism (Priority Ukraine Requirements List). In coordination with NATO, this is how the most urgent needs of Ukraine in military equipment are identified and provided," Pistorius reported.
He also noted that Germany helped train 21,000 Ukrainian servicemen. "This year and next, we will likely train another 10,000," added the head of the German defence department.
He emphasized the need to "ensure a strong Ukraine" so that it can confidently participate in these complex negotiations.
"What exactly Germany’s contribution to security guarantees will look like is not yet defined, and this issue will be resolved on a political and military level. We take into account, firstly, the course of the negotiations, secondly, the possible contribution of the USA, and thirdly, coordination with our closest partners. Of course, it is also necessary to assess the readiness shown by Russia to reach a peaceful solution," stated Pistorius.
