Russia attacks Ukrainian energy infrastructure, but there will be no fuel shortage in Ukraine — expert
In recent days, Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s fuel and energy infrastructure. However, this will not lead to a fuel shortage at gas stations in the country due to established supplies from abroad, high competition, and market-based pricing.
This was stated by Serhiy Kuyun, the director of the "Consulting Group A-95." He reminded that since the beginning of the week, the aggressor has struck an oil depot in Odesa, an oil refinery in Kremenchuk, and a fuel tanker in Izmail.
"I increasingly hear the question: what will happen to fuel and its prices? The answer is – nothing will happen," Kuyun assured.
He recalled that from 2022-2023, Russians destroyed over 70 oil depots and all refineries in Ukraine. Nevertheless, after the crisis in 2022, the population no longer experienced fuel shortages. Therefore, even despite Russian attacks, there is no fuel shortage in Ukraine, thanks to:
- market-based pricing;
- high competition;
- a diversified system of import supplies.
Unlike Ukraine, which has no domestic oil or refining capacity, Russia is facing an acute shortage of petroleum products, resulting in restrictions on sales at gas stations in some regions.
Kuiun explained this by the state regulation of prices in Russia and the lack of import supplies due to excessively high domestic prices. At the same time, the expert noted that Russian media link the fuel shortage and rising costs to Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s oil refining infrastructure.
