The son of the mayor of Pryluky, Yaroslav Popenko, was denied the cancellation of suspicion of drug trafficking

The son of Pryluky Mayor Olha Popenko, Yaroslav Popenko, who is suspected of systematically trafficking drugs, was denied the cancellation of the notice of suspicion. This decision was made by the Chernihiv Court of Appeals on October 15.

Recall that Yaroslav Popenko was detained on July 16 on suspicion of systematic drug trafficking. On July 18, the Pryluky City District Court selected a preventive measure in the form of detention for two months with the right to post bail in the amount of 242,240 hryvnias. Subsequently, bail was posted for the suspect.

On September 19, Popenko’s lawyer, Yuriy Zabalskyi, appealed to the Pryluky City District Court to cancel the notice of suspicion. On September 24, the court decided to deny the request. Therefore, the defence filed an appeal to the Chernihiv Court of Appeals.

Both the prosecution and the defence joined the October 15 session via video link. Popenko himself did not appear at the session because he is undergoing treatment, as reported by his lawyer.

Yuriy Zabalskyi requested the appeal to be granted.

“A police officer entered Popenko’s circle. He repeatedly encouraged him to jointly use narcotic substances. This is categorically prohibited by the current Criminal Procedure Code. Therefore, I believe that the grounds that were obtained are clearly and categorically inadmissible. There is no other factual data regarding my client’s involvement in this offense,” commented Yuriy Zabalskyi.

Prosecutor Anatoliy Sukhonos requested not to satisfy the appeal: “There were appropriate instructions from investigators and operational staff to conduct certain investigative actions. At this time, the pre-trial investigation stage of opening materials has been completed. I request that the appeal be denied.”

The panel of judges did not satisfy the appeal of the suspect’s lawyer.
