NYT: The Russian Army uses CABs to quickly seize territories
According to a retired Ukrainian army colonel, aerial bombs are an expensive but at the same time effective tool for the enemy. Strikes on Ukrainian Armed Forces positions clear the way for the occupying infantry.
For about two years, the war in Ukraine was fought primarily on the ground, but recently the enemy’s tactics have changed. He began to use aviation more often and use various weapons against the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
This is discussed in the material of The New York Times.
The air forces of both warring countries played a secondary role for several reasons, journalists note. In particular, we are talking about the limited number of aircraft in Ukraine, as well as Russia’s inability to achieve the advantage it hoped for in this way.
At the same time, during the offensive of the invaders, the role of their aviation still remains significant. The enemy uses equipment along the front line to drop powerful guided bombs on the positions of Ukrainian defenders, thereby clearing the way for infantry.
This tactic was actively used by the Russian Armed Forces in the Avdiivka area of the Donetsk region, and was captured by the occupiers a few weeks ago. Accordingly, the enemy’s methods may be effective, but they carry risks.
“This is an expensive but quite effective tool (air bombs - ed.) that Russia is now using in the war. It is dangerous for them to send their fighters close to the front line, but they can effectively influence Ukrainian positions,” said a retired Ukrainian army colonel Serhiy Hrabskyi.
The main change in the tactics of the Russian Armed Forces occurred at the beginning of this year. Guided munitions in the form of aerial bombs began to attack Ukrainian positions more often, flying a huge distance to the front. They carry hundreds of kilograms of explosives capable of breaching the underground bunkers protecting soldiers at the front.
“These bombs completely destroy any position. All buildings and structures simply turn into a foundation pit after just one bomb hits,” a Ukrainian soldier who fought in Avdiivka said about this.
Serhiy Hrabsky also said that, despite the high risks of losses, the Russians continue bloody offensives to capture populated areas. The occupiers don’t care about life. If they have orders, they will use all available weapons to attack.
