The EU is preparing to return duties on eggs from Ukraine

The European Commission plans to renew duties on Ukrainian eggs and possibly sugar within the next two weeks after official Kyiv exhausted quotas for their supplies to the European Union.

This was reported by Euronews TV channel.

A European Commission spokesman confirmed to Euronews that egg imports from Ukraine to the EU have reached their quota, meaning the EU will introduce customs restrictions within the next two weeks.

From the TV channel’s sources we learned that the import of Ukrainian sugar is under the radar of the EU executive branch after Kyiv exhausted its export quota back in May. This means that tariffs could affect this product as well.

“We cannot speculate on the pace of future imports,” another European Commission representative told Euronews, adding that the agency continues to monitor the situation with imports from Ukraine.

At the same time, the EU association representing European sugar consumers in the food industry (CIUS) is concerned about limiting the volume of imports of this product. She notes that in the coming years, sugar volumes will not be sufficient to meet demand in the EU market.

The EU officially announced that from June 19 it has returned tariff quotas on the import of Ukrainian oats due to exceeding the import limit of this crop.

The EU has therefore applied an emergency brake that is automatically triggered if import volumes reach the annual average recorded between 1 July 2021 and 31 December 2023.
