In front of the checkpoint "Medyka - Shehyni," Polish farmers started a strike

On Saturday, November 23, Polish farmers began a strike near the "Medyka – Shehyni" border crossing.

This is reported by Polish radio RMF24.

Journalists note that the farmers are striking due to:

  • the unfulfilled demand to maintain the level of agricultural tax in 2024 at the 2023 level,
  • concerns about the European Union signing a free trade agreement with the South American MERCOSUR countries, namely Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

Currently, the farmers have blocked National Road 28, and near the railway overpass at the entrance to Medyka, they are not allowing trucks coming from Ukraine. On the other hand, trucks heading from Poland to Ukraine are only allowed to pass at the rate of one per hour. However, in both directions, the farmers are permitting the passage of passenger cars, buses, and humanitarian aid.

The spokesman for the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Bartosz Gubernat, noted that regarding the maintenance of the tax level this year at the 2023 level, a relevant bill is being prepared. As for the EU free trade agreement with the MERCOSUR countries, according to Gubernat, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has made it clear that it will not be signed.
