On May 23, Ukraine and Russia conducted a large prisoner exchange. On this day, 390 Ukrainians returned home from captivity, including 270 soldiers of the Ukrainian Defence Forces and 120 civilians. Correspondingly, 270 Russian military personnel and 120 civilians were handed over to Russia.

This exchange was announced by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "We are bringing our people home," he wrote on his official Telegram channel, adding that this exchange was the first step in implementing the prisoner swap agreement in the "1000 for 1000" format, agreed upon by Ukraine and Russia during negotiations in Istanbul.
