The UN High Commissioner has called on Russia to immediately stop its invasion of Ukraine
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk called on the Russian Federation to immediately stop its aggression in Ukraine.
This is reported with reference to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
“The time has come to end Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, to commit to - and implement - a comprehensive ceasefire that will stop the daily violence and destruction, as well as to embark on genuine peace negotiations based on respect for international law,” Turk stated.
According to him, it is extremely important to prioritize people and their rights in order to achieve a lasting solution.
“The needs and rights of those most affected by the conflict, including prisoners of war, detained civilians, deported and forcibly displaced children, as well as internally displaced persons and those living in occupied territories of Ukraine, must be at the center of discussions related to peace,” noted the UN High Commissioner.
Turk also emphasized the importance of the recent prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia: “Many families can now breathe a sigh of relief as their loved ones have finally returned home. At the same time, other families have lost their relatives and their homes as cities across Ukraine suffer from shelling.”
