The Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court reduced the sentence of former judge Chaus to 8.5 years of imprisonment
The Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) partially satisfied the appeals and reduced the sentence for former judge of the Dniprovskyi District Court of Kyiv, Mykola Chaus, from 10 to 8.5 years of imprisonment. This decision was made within the framework of the review of Chaus’s case.
In June 2023, the HACC sentenced Chaus to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property and deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for three years. However, after an appeal, the court made the decision to reduce the term of punishment.
It should be recalled that Mykola Chaus was detained in August 2016 on suspicion of receiving a bribe in the amount of 150 thousand dollars. Chaus was detained while burying the money in two glass jars in the yard of his house. The case caused a great resonance and became one of the most well-known cases of corruption crimes among Ukrainian judges.
The decision of the Appeals Chamber of the HACC may become the subject of further legal procedures, as the defence has the right to appeal to the cassation instance.
