Despite billion-dollar investments and over 200 codified models, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are reducing units that use Ground Robotic Complexes (GRC).

This was reported by military expert in electronic warfare and communications systems Serhiy Beskrestnov ("Flash"), noting that the army has yet to realize the importance of deploying combat robots on the battlefield.

According to him, the equipment is in stock, but the military often refuses to accept it. As a result, some units will continue to use GRC, but overall this means a step backward in the development of the entire industry.

According to military analysts, this year it is planned to supply up to 15,000 units of GRC worth about 6 billion UAH. However, due to a lack of a systematic approach and efficiency issues, some models have not found widespread use.

The most common purpose of ground drones is logistics. They transport ammunition, medicines, arrange positions, and deliver provisions. Some platforms are equipped with combat equipment, such as machine gun modules, and are used for fire engagement of the enemy or demolition of engineering barriers.

However, their mass use on the front is limited by several factors:

  • issues with mobility (especially in wheeled models),

  • limited control range (up to 2 km),

  • lack of unified application tactics,

  • shortage of trained operators.

To solve technical problems, signal relays and fiber optic control systems are being implemented. At the same time, several manufacturers are opening their own operator training schools, trying to engage the military in training.

However, without strategic support and systematic implementation at the Ministry of Defence level, the development of this technology risks remaining marginal, despite its potential to reduce risks for the military and increase combat effectiveness.
