From Berlin to Hamburg: Germans took to the streets in demonstrations in support of Ukraine

Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 24 this year was celebrated not only in Ukraine but also in numerous cities across Germany. Pro-Ukrainian demonstrations and rallies became a way to express solidarity with Ukraine, support its people in their fight against Russian aggression, and remind the world of the importance of international support.

Ukraine was also congratulated by German politicians. This was reported by DW.

In Berlin, hundreds of people joined the event at the call of 21 organizations. Participants marched about 3 km from the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district to the Brandenburg Gate, forming several columns. The demonstration was held under the slogan "The Future Means Memory." On their posters, participants commemorated those who died for Ukraine’s independence and demanded weapons supplies and political support for Kyiv from the global community.

In Bonn, approximately 150 people gathered for a rally. Some came dressed in traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirts and carrying Ukrainian flags. Particular attention was drawn to a carnival float from Düsseldorf, depicting Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump "dividing" Ukraine.

In Mainz, around 500 people held a rally on the bridge over the Rhine connecting the city to Wiesbaden. In central Kiel, about 300 participants gathered, while in Hamburg, approximately 1,000 people joined the demonstration.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also congratulated Ukraine on Independence Day and emphasized the courage of Ukrainians.

"With great courage, Ukrainian women and men are defending themselves against Russian attacks. They are fighting for our free order in Europe and a just world. On Independence Day, we stand unwaveringly by their side—today and in the future," he stated.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also expressed support for the Ukrainian people, wishing that the celebration of independence would give Ukrainian women and men renewed courage to resist Russian aggression.
