IAEA specialists cannot access the newly built dam on the canal of one of the cooling ponds of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. Russian occupiers are not allowing the experts to pass.
This is reported by the IAEA in a report dated August 28.
"The IAEA team based at the Zaporizhzhya site, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, continues to request access to the recently constructed dam, but they have not been allowed so far due to security concerns," the report states.
The purpose of the dam is to isolate one of the channels from one of the cooling ponds of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. The dam will help maintain the water level in the canal at about 14 meters. This level is sufficient for the operation of the station’s reactor cooling system.
"Our access to this dam is essential for assessing the cooling water situation, which is extremely important given the unstable nuclear safety situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP," said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Also, IAEA experts were not allowed to access the western part of the engine room of one of the reactors of the Zaporizhzhya NPP during the weekly inspection.
Additionally, the IAEA mission reported hearing military activity near the occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP.
