In Rivne region, a man with a knife attacked and injured a police officer

A resident of Varash, located in Rivne region, stabbed a patrol police officer during detention. In response to the offender’s actions, law enforcement officers used their service firearms.

This was reported by the Rivne Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

"Late in the evening on October 8, the police in Varash received a report that an unknown individual was disturbing public order, behaving aggressively, harassing people, and waving a knife. At the scene, patrol officers established that the offender was a resident of Varash, previously convicted of causing grievous bodily harm, and currently on probation," the statement reads.

It is noted that the man did not comply with the law enforcement officers’ demands to cease his unlawful actions and continued his aggressive behavior. As a result, the patrol officers used special means against the offender.

During the detention, the man stabbed one of the police officers in the head and back, to which the officers responded by using their service firearms, shooting the assailant twice in the leg.

Both the aggressive man and the injured patrol officer were taken to the hospital, and currently, the health condition of both is satisfactory.

The suspect has been informed of the suspicion. The issue of selecting a preventive measure in the form of detention is under consideration.

The penalties under the relevant articles provide for a maximum punishment of up to 7 years of imprisonment.
