Zelenskyy urges IAEA and the world to force Russia to ensure the safety of Zaporizhzhya NPP
Russia must be forced to ensure safety for the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant so that repair crews can start working. For this, the IAEA’s position must be clear and straightforward.
This was stated by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He mentioned that he discussed the situation at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is capable of restoring the power supply lines to the plant and ensuring its safety, "as it has done many times before." He stressed that Ukrainian specialists are the guarantee of safety "one hundred percent."
"Russia is not interested in restoring safety—they must be pressured into it, and a clearer, more straightforward position from the IAEA is needed. Russia can and must stop the shelling so that repair crews can work," the Ukrainian leader noted.
He reminded that currently, the Zaporizhzhya NPP is experiencing its longest blackout—the plant has been running on diesel generators for almost three weeks.
"This should not be happening. Russia is taking advantage of the moment—and this is due to the focus of global diplomacy on the Middle East. Putin has escalated the situation at the ZNPP, and Russia has also launched more insidious strikes on our energy infrastructure," Zelenskyy stated.
The President added that with airstrikes, the Russians are trying to compensate for what they failed to achieve on the ground in the spring and summer.
