Sybiha: Ukraine’s membership in NATO should remain a subject of negotiations
Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiha emphasized that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO, as the most effective security guarantee for our country, should remain on the agenda during future peace negotiations.
The head of Ukrainian diplomacy stated this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
"NATO should not be removed from the agenda, this is a key position. Yes, currently there is no consensus among our partners regarding Ukraine’s membership in NATO, but I repeat, it is enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine, it is the strategic choice of the Ukrainian people, and the most effective guarantee for Ukraine’s security is joining NATO", Sybiha noted.
Among other security guarantees, he highlighted the protection of Ukraine’s air and maritime space and the strengthening of its own military capabilities.
"When we talk about other specific and effective security guarantees - it’s air patrols, the use of air forces, air defence systems of our allies. It is also the sea. These are undoubtedly capabilities that arise from the use of the fleet in the Black Sea. In addition, it is the support of our defence industry," the minister emphasized.
He noted that we must become increasingly independent in the defence sphere and "strengthen our position so much that the enemy clearly understands the consequences and price of possible further provocations or aggression."
"However, the main priority is, undoubtedly, air defence systems, enhancing our potential in the drone sphere, and certainly artillery capabilities - it is both ammunition and artillery systems. Thus, all these priorities are clearly defined, we are cooperating with partners and focusing on achieving concrete results," the head of the MFA concluded.
As reported, U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated that Ukraine’s accession to NATO is unlikely, and this opinion is shared not only by the U.S. but also by other member countries of the Alliance.
