Candidate for the presidency of Romania seeks to ban the transit of Ukrainian grain through the country
Former Prime Minister of Romania and presidential candidate Victor Ponta stated that if elected, he would stop the export of Ukrainian grain through Romanian territory.
This was reported by Reuters.
Ponta said he intends to halt the export of Ukrainian grain through Romania’s Black Sea ports to "protect local farmers."
Additionally, he promised to "protect" neighboring Moldova if it is attacked by an aggressor Russia.
As the agency notes, in the three years following Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, Romania has helped export about 29 million tons of Ukrainian grain through its Black Sea port of Constanta, becoming a "main alternative route" for Ukraine’s exports.
"In recent years, policies have been implemented that favor Ukrainian grain in terms of port access to the detriment of Romanian grain, and Romanian farmers have suffered greatly as a result," Ponta stated.
At the same time, he expressed his readiness to support other measures already implemented by the Romanian authorities to support Ukraine, including the transit of weapons and the training of Ukrainian pilots.
