The Security Service of Ukraine arrested a Russian "mole" in a combat brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The Security Service of Ukraine detained a Russian "mole" in a combat brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region.

The military counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine, with the assistance of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, detained a Russian Federation agent in the combat zone in the Kharkiv region. He turned out to be a contract soldier from one of the brigades of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who was working for the Russian military intelligence (better known as the GRU). According to case materials, the traitor "leaked" to the occupiers the locations of the combat unit in which he served on the Kupiansk direction. It was documented step by step how the agent used a messenger to contact a handler from the Russian GRU and transmit to him the coordinates of his and other units from the frontline, informs the Security Service of Ukraine.

The enemy was particularly interested in the coordinates of headquarters, reserve command posts, fortifications, and fire positions of the Defense Forces. To communicate with the Russian intelligence officer, the "mole" used voice messages that he dictated in an anonymous chat. Using the agent’s geolocations, the occupiers were preparing missile and bomb strikes, before which the traitor was supposed to exit the perimeter of fire damage. The military counterintelligence of the SSU uncovered the enemy’s intentions in advance and prevented their implementation. After measures were taken to secure the Defense Forces locations, the traitor was detained near the line of combat engagement.

During the search, two phones were seized from him, which he used to communicate with the Russian GRU. According to the investigation, the suspect was remotely recruited by the occupiers in January of this year. The SSU also identified his handler – an officer of the Russian military intelligence stationed at the eastern frontline.

The investigators of the Security Service informed the agent of the suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed under martial law). The perpetrator has been taken into custody without the right to bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property. The comprehensive measures were conducted jointly with the investigators of the SSU in the Kharkiv region under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the field of defense of the Eastern region.
